First impressions were ok, the Abbey sat in an elevated position then we had to negotiate the narrow drive which was tight even in a little car, the drive being covered in builders dust looked a bit untidy, then parking next to discarded hanging baskets and wheel barrow it was a bit like have we got to the right place? Then first impressions in the hallway and reception area was oh no, I’ve picked a duffer here, my heart sank a little and I didn’t get any kind of wow factor.

The receptionist was off duty and the owner told me to take a look around the bar, sitting room and dining area. Yes I could see that the proportions of the rooms were impressive and there was an equally impressive view out towards the sea, however a few things just didn’t help, like the broken foot on one of the chesterfields, a giant teddy bear on a seventies rattan chair, and the copious quantity of family photographs on the piano and covering an entire wall, which slightly made you feel like you were somewhere you shouldn’t have been. The dining room had huge chandeliers and a slightly curious turquoise colour on the walls. We were staying in the newly renovated St Deiniol’s Lodge, tastefully furnished but no wow factor again, just a bit too ‘new build’ and the bed was a joke, one touch and it would slide across the room! There was an unexplained disappearance of the wardrobe key, it somehow managed to move from the outside of the wardrobe into a pocket of a dress hanging up inside – a bit freaky!

We had some very nice sandwiches and some wine in the lounge and dinner was cooked by the owners wife and although not named chef standard pretty close which is not bad going. There was slightly too much foliage on the plates and the portions were a bit too hearty for me, but the actual food was delicious. It would have been nice to have had a table cloth. The service was very attentive and they made a special effort for Valentine’s. When I did finally meet the receptionist she was really lovely and friendly.

So overall good but I’d expect more of a wow factor for the money.
