Top notch (posh) nosh and hotel. Lovely old manor with proper white table cloth dinning and cutlery, always makes a dinner special. There are lots of rooms for the diners and rooms for relaxing with coffees etc. The room we dinned in had a lovely big If you are visiting the Gower and want to seek out somewhere a bit special for a celebration or just a treat I definitely recommend Fairyhill. Our dinner was superb from start to finish. Note: book a few days in advance as they get very booked up.

Been here a couple of times on a recommendation. Tucked away in a little village. The front door goes straight into the dinning room which more like a tea room than a restaurant but the food makes up for that. Very good food both visits, lobster cooked really well. One of the times we went we were the only diners which personally i don’t mind. Definitely would seek this place out again.

Mamma Mia’s, Chepstow

Great BIG pizza’s big enough to share, always a selection of specials including fish of the day. We tried the swordfish with prawn, cream and white wine sauce, that comes with well cooked selection of veg and sauted potatoes, it was delicious. The Italian fizz is very drinkable and inexpensive. It can be noisy at the weekends, but good fun. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Definitely a regular haunt.

If you are looking for a place to have a leisurely chilled-out drink and a bite to eat of an evening, Le Golfy next door to Les Ecureuils Campsite is definitely worth a visit, nestled amongst the fragrant pine trees with it’s warm colourful hibiscus bar area and cool laid back Caribbean inspired music you can quite easily while away a whole evening. We shared a nice house red and a very tasty pizza, and the friendly staff don’t mind if you are in no hurry to leave. They are open to the early hours, I’m told. They also have a little mini golf amongst the trees to keep the kiddies occupied, hence the name Le Golfy.

Landa Palace, Burgos

Conveniently situated on the intersection of two motorways The Landa Palace near Burgos is probably the most impressive, opulent and expensive ‘TravelLodge’ in the world… Apparently built by one of Spain’s wealthiest hotelier families to create ‘the best hotel ever’ regardless of location or whether it made any money, the Landa Palace is definitely among the coolest places we’ve stayed.

A dismantled and rebuilt castle forms the main part of the hotel and our room was in the tower, an impressive entrance led to a huge wood paneled suite with a kingsize bed in a curtained recess at one end and a day bed at the other! The bathroom was equally grand as you’d expect with a deep roll top bath and a luxury shower.. The swimming pool with a domed ceiling featured well, as did the many plush sitting rooms and the attached restaurant, where we accidentally ordered and devoured a suckling pig… Could have been worse i suppose.

An unexpectedly fabulous dinner was to be had in the restaurant on the Brittany Ferries Plymouth-Santander crossing… Veuve Clicquot, a tasty flaky crab salad starter followed by a surprisingly good fruits de mer and eye-popping icecream profiteroles with a chocolate sauce to finish… By boat is definitely the only way to fly!

The hotel is beautifully decorated, it is immaculate. The rooms are especially classy. The food is of a standard which far exceeds any other hotel outside of London – brilliant. The best value for money in a long time. We came back refreshed and inspired!

The Old Boathouse, Cotswolds Water Park

Nicely fitted out ‘gastro pub’ on the edge of the Cotswolds Water Park. The Old Boathouse is a stylish, light and airy bar & restaurant with a deck that backs on to the lake behind, perfect for a quick drink and a bite to eat on a sunny day.

We both had the house burger – a well cooked, slightly gristly burger in a toasted bun with a side of fries and smokey relish. I wouldn’t have called it gastronomic but it filled a hole and didn’t give me the poops which is always a bonus.

Their ‘espresso’ wasn’t up to much, looked and tasted like the dregs of the filter coffee pot to me. But I was particularly impressed with the facilities here; good quality, clean and new, not at all cringey.
