I heard about the Westwood B&B through the Damien Hirst restaurant 11 The Quay’s website, in fact I thought is was affiliated, later found out it was actually a little drive away from the restaurant down on the harbour tucked away up a steep drive on a road that would not be out of place in Michael Jackson’s video Thriller!
I lost count of how many boarded up villas there where. The one right next door to the Westwood was covered in scaffolding but didn’t seem to have any body working on it. Having said that once we were greeted by the very pleasant maitre d’ and stepped inside we were transformed to a whole other world.
The grand old Victorian mansion had obviously been lovingly and tastefully restored by the current owners. Our room was enormous, it had a huge bay window with panoramic views across Ilfracombe, stylishly decorated, huge comfy bed, lovely old three door wardrobe, flat screen tv and a personal favorite piece of furniture a Barcelona chair. The bathroom was equally well considered with statement designer chairs, large claw footed bath and well equipped corner shower. A large beautifully decorated lounge and little conservatory sitting area was also available to guests down stairs. Wi-fi was available.
In the morning breakfast was served in yet again a fabulously decorated light an airy dining room. Pieces from the owner’s far eastern travels were on the mantle-piece of the large original fireplace. There was a huge selection of breakfast items we could help ourselves to, plus a selection of cooked options which were very tasty.
On the whole Ilfracombe in the winter is a bit of a ghost town, but if I were visiting 11 The Quay again for dinner I’d definitely revisit the Westwood which you could most definitely award the term ’boutique’ to. It was probably the best B&B I have ever stayed in, simply superb.
