We’ve just returned from a very relaxing birthday weekend at Driftwood, or Driftw o o d as it’s spelled on the hotel literature. It’s been on our list of places to do for a while now and I have to say it didn’t disappoint. Top marks for this South Cornwall retreat.

First impressions neither wowed me nor put me off. Hugh Grant’s little brother greeted us, showed us round the hotel and carried our bags to our tastefully appointed, if a little on the small side, room. Perfectly adequate, but no more, and if I had to fault Driftwood it would be that the accommodation was all a bit crammed in. We were lucky enough use the deck but could overhear conversations couples were having in the rooms above. There was a holiday camp type lack of privacy. That said I’d find it difficult to fault it further.

The garden was awesome, overlooking the sea, I didn’t fully appreciate it immediately perhaps it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting but I was reluctant to leave. Lots of places to sit, chill, relax, whatever, including a secluded cliff side terrace and it’s own little beach.

The ‘Rustic Cabin’ that sounds sooo good on the website is nothing like we’d imagined ! We counted our blessings having not been able to book it out of season! The beach is a short hike down (and back up) a fairly steep path but looks just as nice from the top I reckon.

The food was another surprise, top notch, definitely one of the best restaurants we’ve been to. Nice ambience, the service was great. There’s not many places that I would definitely go back to but I think Driftwood is probably one.
