Restaurant, Brittany Ferries

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

An unexpectedly fabulous dinner was to be had in the restaurant on the Brittany Ferries Plymouth-Santander crossing… Veuve Clicquot, a tasty flaky crab salad starter followed by a surprisingly good fruits de mer and eye-popping icecream profiteroles with a chocolate sauce to finish… By boat is definitely the only way to fly!

The Old Rectory Hotel, Exmoor, Devon

Monday, May 24th, 2010

The hotel is beautifully decorated, it is immaculate. The rooms are especially classy. The food is of a standard which far exceeds any other hotel outside of London – brilliant. The best value for money in a long time. We came back refreshed and inspired!

Nicely fitted out ‘gastro pub’ on the edge of the Cotswolds Water Park. The Old Boathouse is a stylish, light and airy bar & restaurant with a deck that backs on to the lake behind, perfect for a quick drink and a bite to eat on a sunny day.

Cafe Shore, Sandbanks, Poole

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Cafe Shore is a stylish bar/restaurant in the exclusive ‘millionaires playground’ of Sandbanks, with uninterrupted views across Poole Harbour if early enough to get a table by the windows. We had some awesome jumbo prawns in beer batter with a sweet chilli sauce, followed by the ‘fish of the day’ – a barely edible plaice. It tasted ok but was mostly skin and bones, and shot out of me like there was a fire drill…

The Pier Cafe, Prince of Wales Pier, Falmouth

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Not much to look at from the outside but a really lovely clean, fresh cafe offering a really varied menu. The staff are really helpful and lots of locally sourced food and drinks. I had jacket potato with coronation chicken which was tasty, had a nice salad and coleslaw on the side – not the usual droopy lettuce. My mum had toasted sandwich which was again really tasy and the bread very fresh.

Great coffee stop and lunch venue with outdoor seating for when the weather is good which overlooks the harbour and sea.

The Harris Arms, Portgate, Devon

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Having read about this pub in lots of publications and having heard about all of the awards that they had won, I was expecting a really great place for a cosy anniversary lunch with my husband.

We were both really disappointed – the young member of staff kept forgetting things such as the menu which would have been funny if it hadn’t meant that we had to go and get our own.

The fish was really tasteless and greasy and the chips tasted like mass produced frozen chips – not what you would have expected from a pub with such a reputation.

Having not been impressed by the lunchtime food, the wine i had was lovely – a Chilean merlot which was stunning. I would like to go back and try the evening menu in the hope that it was just an off day but can’t convince my husband to come!

The Beach Hut, Watergate Bay, Cornwall

Friday, April 9th, 2010

When my nephew was asked what he wanted to do during his annual Easter visit to Cornwall to see me, he replied ‘well we’ll have to go to the Beach Hut of course’, which is quite a compliment coming from the boy who once said he could eat for England!!!  He ordered his favourite dish of mussels and after using the lovely Baker Tom bread to soak up all the juices his plate didn’t have a morsal of food left on it. Fabulous food & views of the beach as usual.

The Falmouth Townhouse, Falmouth, Cornwall

Friday, April 9th, 2010

Finding somewhere which serves a ‘late’ (after 3pm) Sunday Roast can prove tricky, luckily we spotted The Townhouse, which served us one of the tastiest Sunday roasts we’ve eaten and at a fair price of £7.95

Hotel Endsleigh, Devon

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Hotel Endsleigh is situated near a small village called Milton Abbot on Dartmoor near Tavistock. First impressions were great, driving down the long drive through the country estate to the gravel drive parking area (always nice!). Hotel Endsleigh is a collection of grade 1 listed buildings  originally designed in the 18th century as a  hunting lodge.
